Vandaag al weer de 4e dag dat ik in Eldoret zit. Waarom blijf je in zo`n gat hangen kun je je dan afvragen. Tja, de combinatie lekker te kunnen eten, op een rustige plek uit te kunnen slapen plus de mogelijkheid zowat elke dag voetbal te kunnen kijken (premier league, la liga, ... wahnsinn!) maakt het extreem moeilijk mij los te rukken van zo`n paradijsje!.

Oh ja! De regentijd kan ik ook als excuus opvoeren: ik zit er middenin en het is -in tegenstelling tot in Guinee waar de hemelsluizen aan het eind van de dag openden - hier midden op de dag raak en niet zo zuinig ook!. Ik zit dan weliswaar nog op een idyllische asfaltweg door golvend groen bergachtig terrein met daarover de hele dag zwaar verkeer die je steeds op een haar na passeren.

Hier is het heuvelachtig tegen het bergachtige aan wat het fietsen behoorlijk zwaar maakt. Ik was alweer een week in Jinja en nu dus alweer 4 dagen in Eldoret (Kenia). Het is hier heel groen, en bijna al het land is in cultuur gebracht. Gisteren had ik even het idee dat ik in Brabant of limburg zat, alleen de tukols (ronde hutten) en de ranzige infrastructuur klopten niet. Nu wordt het vlakker. Ik kom langs twee natuurparken maar het is nogal duur om die te bezoeken en is het nu regentijd. Bovendien moet je verplicht met een gids zo`n park in wat me een beetje tegenstaat (ik wil altijd alles alleen doen :) ).

Hier in Eldoret heb je weer echte cafe`s en kun je zowaar dingen van een menu kiezen, ongeloofelijk! Vanaf de grens tot Eldoret zie je (als je fietst) hoe arm de mensen eigenlijk zijn, al lopen ze er wel verzorgd bij. Het plaatsje hier vind ik geen drol aan, maar het is wel een universiteitsstadje wat ook wel weer leuk is.

Ik hoop heel erg dat het met het ethiopisch visum gaat lukken. Ik ga in Nairobi weer hun ambassade uitproberen, enfin ik houd je op de hoogte. Hier heb ik in ieder geval een voorproefje gekregen wat voor weg je krijgt na een flinke regenbui (en zeg maar 500 km tot ethiopie is niet verhard slik). Dat is dus weer iets om je op te verheugen (zelfs de camions, pick ups wachten vaak na een bui een dag of twee zodat de `weg` weer wat minder blubberig is...

Echt ziek ben ik hier nog niet geworden, maar ik heb sinds zuid soedan last van buikkrampen wat heel irritant is, ik weet niet of het van het eten komt of vervuild drinkwater, ik denk het eten. Zodra ik de bonen hier eet is het mis, al ben ik dan niet ziek en kan ik toch de hele dag fietsen al is het wel moeizamer. Ik denk doordat ik op Curacao heb gewoond (wat toch min of meer dezelfde condities heeft als hier, qua mensen, klimaat en eten - hier eten ze ook een soort funchi (maispap), ze noemen het `posho` of `Ugali` in Kenya.

Ik ga denk ik stoppen met malariapillen slikken: een vuistregel zegt dat je niet langer dan 4 maanden moet slikken, omdat daarna de parasiet resistent wordt (de malaria drug killt namelijk de parasiet maar ook je darmflora, de `goede` bacterien, die normaal gesproken de gemuteerde malaria parasiet doden -snap je het nog?? haha). Bovendien is het medicijn schadelijk voor je lever (als je het te lang slikt)...

Morgen ECHT vegdah, regen of geen regen. Ik hoop dan in drie dagen in Nairobi te zijn -insj-allah en het laatste stuk over een super-high way die de Matatu`s (ranzige 8-personen busjes geproduceerd in de volksrepubliek en standaard volgepropt met +5 personen  ) en Boda Boda`s (= bromtaxi`s) als een soort race parcours schijnen te gebruiken, aarrchhhhh .

Ik passeer dan zelfs een stad die Kikuyu heet, lachuh!. De Kikuyu is namelijk een etnische groep, wat gedrongen, dat zich vooral bezig houdt met landbouw terwijl de rijzige, langere Massai vee herders zijn (lees het boek van Anton Quintana: `de bavianenkoning`, een absolute aanrader!).

Today is already the 4th day I am in Eldoret. `Why do you hang out in such a hole that long one might ask. Well, the combination of delicious food, a quiet place to sleep a lot (almost every day) plus the ability to watch football (premier league, la liga ... Wahnsinn!) makes it extremely difficult to get away from such a paradise!.

Oh yes! The rainy season I can also use as an excuse. I find myself right in the middle of it and here it is -unlike in Guinea where the the showers really started at the end of the day - showtime at noon what kinda sucks because if you are cycling you have to search shelter untill the rain stops which delays you!. I'm still cycling on an idyllic asphalt road loaded with heavy traffic through green mountainous terrain. A nice environment but quite stressy with those trucks that overtake you all the time with a distance towards you let`s say about 2 inches...

Here it is hilly, mountainous terrain what makes cycling pretty difficult and exhaustive. I was already a week in Jinja and now again 4 days in here in Eldoret, Kenya just to let my body recover. It's very green, and almost all land is cultivated. Yesterday I had the idea I was in Brabant or Limburg (south of the Netherlands) only the tukols (round huts) and the shitty infrastructure (dirty tarmac road, muddy secondary roads overflown with rain water) didn`t fit in the picture. Now the terrain becomes flatter. I will pass two wild parks but it is quite expensive to visit them moreover it is now rainy season. Plus the fact that you are obliged to go in such a park with a guide which I also don`t like (I always want to do everything myself :) ).


 Here in Eldoret are real cafe`s and things you can actually choose from a menu, incredible! From the border to Eldoret  you see (if you cycle) how poor the people actually are, although they are not dressed as poor people. The town here is in my opinion not really worth it to stay, but it is a university town (young people) which is also fun.

I very much hope it will work with the Ethiopian visa. I will go to their embassy in Nairobi to try again, anyway I'll keep you informed. Here I at least got a taste for what you get after heavy rainfall (keeping in mind that 500 kms to the Ethiopian border is not hardened ). That is something to look forward to (even the trucks, pick- ups often wait after heavy showers a day or two so that the `road` is a bit less muddy ...)

I have not become really sick here yet, but I have since southern Sudan suffered from abdominal cramps which is very annoying, I do not know if it comes from eating the local food or drinking contaminated water but I think it is the food. Once I eat beans here my stomach protests which is a pity because the beans here are really tasty!. However I am not sick and I can still bike all day although it is difficult/ annoying with a `protesting` stomach. I think because I've lived in Curacao that I don`t get sick (where are more or less the same conditions as here in Africa, in terms of people, climate, food - here, they eat a kind of `funchi` (not to be confused with the Italian `fungi`!), they call it `posho` or `Ugali` in Kenya which is in fact a substance of maize).

I'm thinking I stop taking malaria pills: a rule of thumb says that you should not take longer than 4 months malaria pills, otherwise the malaria parasite becomes resistant to the malaria drug (malaria pills kill not only the parasite but also your intestinal flora, the `good' bacteriae, which normally kills mutant malaria parasite -do you still understand? haha). Moreover, the medication harms your liver if you take it too long ...

Tomorrow I REALLY have to continue, rain or no rain. I hope arriving in three days in Nairobi -insj-allah and the last part of the road will be a super-high way that the Matatu `s (rancid 8-passenger vans produced in the People's Republic and standard crammed with 5 people in addition over the normal capacity ) and Boda Boda`s (= motor taxi's) use as a race track aarrchhhhh.

I will even pass through a town called Kikuyu, mental!. The Kikuyu is an ethnic group, which members are quite short and are mainly engaged in agriculture where the tall, long Masai are cattle herders (read the book by Anton Quintana:  `The baboon king`, an absolute must). These two groups seem to be each-others opposite poles (plus versus minus).

 Aujourd'hui c`est déjà le 4ème jour que je suis ici à Eldoret. Pourquoi rester plusieurs de jours dans un trou comme Eldoret?. Eh bien, la combinaison de pouvoir manger délicieux, etre dans un endroit tranquille ou on peut dormir presque tous les jours bien et longue, ainsi la posibilité à regarder le football (Premier League, la Liga ... Wahnsinn!). Il est extrêmement difficile de sortir des endroits comme ca, pour moi c`est comme le paradis!.

Oh oui! La saison des pluies je peux utiliser aussi comme une excuse: je suis au milieu des pluies et il est - à la différence de la Guinée où les pluies ont commence à la fin de la journée - ici à coup midi que le show commence!. C`est pas conveniente parce que il faut chercher refuge contre les pluies et arreter pedaler ce que retarde. 

Je suis toujours sur une route goudronnee idyllique à travers un terrain montagneux vert où la circulation lourde roule toute la journée que te passe avec un distance tres court. 
Ici, il est vallonné et montagneux ce que fait pedaler assez lourde. J'étais déjà une semaine à Jinja et maintenant à nouveau 4 jours a Eldoret (Kenya). C'est très vert, et presque toutes les terres sont cultivées. Hier, j'ai eu même la idée que j'étais dans le Brabant ou Limbourg (sud de Hollande) seulement que dans le Brabant o bien le Limbourg on ne trouve pas des tukols (des huttes rondes) et un infrastructure rance.  

Maintenant, le paysage devient plus plat. Je vais passer deux parcs sauvages, mais il est assez cher pour visiter l'un et en plus il est maintenant la saison des pluies. En outre, on est obligé entrer un tel parc sauvage avec un guide ce que je deteste (je veux toujours faire moi-même tout :) ).

 Ici à Eldoret on trouve des cafés réels et des choses que vous pouvez réellement choisir dans un menu, c'est incroyable! De la frontière à Eldoret, on voit (si tu pedales) comment les gens sont si pauvres mais s'ils sont bien soignés. La ville ici je ne trouve pas vaut la peine, mais c'est une ville universitaire ce que fait aussi bien (beaucoup des jeunes).

 J'espère très sincèrement que cela va fonctionner avec le visa éthiopien. Je vais l`essayer à nouveau à leur ambassade à Nairobi, de toute façon je te tiendrai au courant. Ici, j`ai recu l`idee au moins un avant-goût de ce que vous vous éloignez après de fortes pluies (disant que 500 miles à l'Ethiopie n'est pas goudronnee mais c`est la boue). C'est quelque chose à espérer (même les camions, pick ups attendent souvent après des pluies forts un jour ou deux afin que le chemin est un peu moins boueux ...

Je ne suis pas ici pas encore devenue vraiment malade, mais j'ai depuis le sud du Soudan souffre de crampes abdominales qui est très ennuyeux, je ne sais pas si il s'agit de manger ou de boire de l`eau contaminé, je pense que c`est la nourriture. Une fois que je mange les haricots d`ici, c'est mal, bien que je ne suis pas malade et je peux encore pedaler toute la journée mais il est difficile. Je pense que parce que j'ai vécu à Curaçao (qui plus ou moins il y a les mêmes conditions qu`ici, en termes de population, le climat, la nourriture - ici, on mange comme a curacao le funchi (pas le meme comme le fungi italien!), les gens ici appellent ça `posho` ou `Ugali` au Kenya.
 
 Je pense que je arrête prendre le medicament le contre paludisme: une règle de pouce dit que il ne faut pas  plus de 4 mois à l`avaler, car alors le parasite devient résistant au medicament (des pilules contre la malaria tue pas seulement le parasite mais aussi ton flore intestinale, donc les `bonnes' bactéries, qui normalement tuent les parasites du paludisme- mutés sont aussi tués... est-ce que tu le comprends encore? haha). En outre, le médicament nuire à ta foie (si on avale le medicament anti-paludisme trop long) ...

Demain je dois VRAIMENT  `vegdah` (`continuer' dans la langue de rue de la Haye ;0) , s`il pleu o non... J'espère arriver dans trois jours à Nairobi insj-allah. Le dernier morceau est sur un superautobahn que les Matatus (Des camionnettes-rances avec un capacite de 8 personnes produites dans la République du peuple et qui sont standard bourrées en plus avec 5 personnes) et des Boda Boda`s (= mobylette de taxi),  semblent utiliser la route comme une piste de course aarrchhhhh.

Je vais passer même par une ville appelée Kikuyu, ri!. Le Kikuyu est un groupe ethnique, de lesquels personnes/ membres sont un peu petits et sont principalement engagés dans l'agriculture. Les longues Masai au contraire sont un peuple des bovins (li le livre ecrit par Anton Quintana: ` Le roi babouin`, un must absolu!)
